My Paper Art Technique

1. TECHNIQUE

Each paper work is the result of a laborious process 100% handmade and handcrafted, from the initial designs to the final assembly, in which no device or machine intervenes. For this reason, any commission must be made well in advance.

This not only guarantees that you will get a unique and unrepeatable paper art piece, where small imperfections and variations are part of its charm and speak of its value, that is, a collector’s item. In addition, it will be a pampered and beloved paper artwork, with which I have shared so much time and experiences that it will give off authentic life.

My papercrafts technique, which allows me to build any 3D object or character from paper, is the result of a three-year self-taught learning process. I like to define it as a combination of paper sculpture, paper engineering, paper tailoring and playing with Lego.

If you want to learn this technique, sign up for the workshop I give in Duduá (Barcelona). For other courses and workshops, please contact me.

2. PROCESS

  1. I make an illustration type drawing.
  2. I adapt it to a technical drawing with the different pieces/parts in 3D that will integrate it.
  3. I create a 2D paper sketch, something like a cut out silhouette, and divide it into parts.
  4. I run different tests to convert it to 3D until I get a valid paper prototype in three dimensions.
  5. I work on the final paper artwork, starting with the structure (divided into parts) and finishing with the surface details.

The duration depends on the level of complexity of the paper artwork and can last from days to weeks, or months in the case of paper miniatures or dioramas involving a few characters and objects.

The cutting tools I use are the crafts knife, regular scissors and curved scissors.

Favini red colored paper

3. PAPER

I use colored papers and cardboards of the most prestigious brands, such as Canson and Favini, acid-free, dyed with rigorous procedures and with resistant weights, which guarantees the durability of the colors and the solidity of the paper structure for decades. The solvent-free liquid white glue is also used for this purpose.

The only precaution to be taken to protect your paper artwork is not to get it wet and to avoid direct sunlight. And, of course, handle it with love and care.
